It is true that there has been a general slowdown in retail spending and the economy in general as a result of the global economic climate. This has had an knock-on effect, of economic strain on the retail sector. However in spite of this it should be remembered that the retail sector has remained a strong growth sector over the past 40 years and there is no reason to think that the current trend is much more than a short term setback.

New vacancies caused by the economic down swing have afforded access to shops which are otherwise often difficult to find available for lease. Some landlords have become more negotiable on their rental prices. Even though the economic trend has been met with alarming concern, many retail businesses have reported, positive results in late 2008 and many retail areas are showing signs of reaming buoyant.

New business ventures are advised to be very cautious before committing, but at the same time are reminded that when the market turns again it may become more difficult to find open spaces to rent and that landlords will once again be less inclined to negotiate rates.
